Description	The records in this series relate to the work undertaken by Mrs Santospirito, as President of the Archbishop’s Committee for Italian Relief, to find employment for Italian migrants. They consist of inward and outward correspondence with prospective employers. Mrs Santospirito sought to place migrants both with private individuals as gardeners or doing odd-jobs, as well as with large companies such as the Melbourne Metropolitan Tramways Board and General Motors Holden. Migrants travelled as far as Barmera, South Australia and Lismore, in Northern New South Wales to work in positions lined up by Lena Santospirito. There are copies of press advertisements placed by the Archbishop’s Committee in the ‘Situations Wanted’ columns on behalf of Italian men. It also contains Mrs Santospirito’s notebooks in which she recorded details of all ‘offerte di lavoro’, such as names, phone numbers, addresses, instructions on how to find the employer’s house, skills and qualifications required. In general, the Archbishop’s Committee worked for unassisted migrants (the majority of post-war migrants to Australia), as the Italian Consulate had established a separate organisation in 1952 for assisted migrants. The Welfare Committee for Italian Assisted Migrants was headed by Mrs Lena Cincotta, who took over the presidency of the Archbishop’s Committee from Mrs Santospirito in 1955. From the records in this series, it is evident that during the peak period of unemployment (1952-53), Mrs Santospirito attempted to find employment for assisted migrants also.
