Description

Arthur Augustus Calwell (1896-1973) was the Federal Member for Melbourne from 1940 to 1972. Calwell was a devout Catholic and close associate of Archbishop Daniel Mannix, as well as a friend to the Santospirito family. He was an outspoken advocate for the Italian community from the time of the internments in World War Two and was the Chairman of the Aliens Classification and Advisory Committee from 1943.

Calwell became Australia’s first Minister for Immigration in 1945 and was the architect of the post-war mass immigration program. Mrs Santospirito frequently sought Calwell’s assistance with the cases of Italian migrants. Calwell made numerous personal representations to the Department of Immigration on behalf of people referred to him by Mrs Santospirito. He continued to help Mrs Santospirito in her dealings with the Department following the defeat of the Curtin Labor Government in 1949.

This series contains copies of correspondence between Calwell and Tasman Heyes, the first Secretary of the Department of Immigration. It also contains correspondence between Calwell and Mrs Santospirito.
