Description

This series consists of copies of letters of introduction produced by Mrs Santospirito to help newly-arrived migrants to find employment. The vast majority of people assisted by Mrs Santospirito and the Archbishop’s Committee were unassisted migrants, however some records indicate that the Committee also helped some assisted migrants.

Mrs Santospirito prepared these letters of introduction, which set out the migrant’s skills, qualifications, etc, to employment bureaux and companies. The migrants could also take a letter of introduction with them to job interviews or visits to prospective employers.

The date range of this series coincides with a period of relatively high unemployment in Australia. Mrs Santospirito, as President of the Archbishop’s Committee, also prepared declarations that a person was destitute, unemployed for x months, presumably to help migrants obtain welfare from the government.
